The Coracle Company

I am a small business that produces coracles based on the design of the River Seven 'Ironbridge Bowl' coracle, as used by one of the best known coracle men 'Eustace Rogers.'

The reasons why the coracle company was set up was to promote the continuation of this part of our heritage and also to give as many people as possible the chance to own one of these delightful little boats.

The coracles traditional primary use was fishing with nets. Fishermen would carry the coracle upstream for some distance to where they wanted to start fishing, allowing the drift of the current to help carry them downstream, so the craft had to be light but strong and durable, as it was a working boat.

However, today the craft is used more for recreational purposes, from using one as a small tender for a narrow boat or for messing around on a pond or moat to getting close to wildlife on the river-bank or getting around in the floods. We are starting an anual regatta in July (please see shows & exhibitions page). You could join in the fun and games with coracle races and even coracle water polo, as well as meet other coracle enthusiasts.

Our coracles are made from Ash laths, then covered with material which is then waterproofed by painting with bitumastic paint. We are in the process of experimenting with different woods (namely willow) and material coverings, and also different coracle designs, like one based on the tywi coracle.
