Safe boating

Coracle Safety Guidelines.

Please remember that coracles are designed to be used on calm sheltered waterways, rapids are not recomended.

  • Always wear a buoyancy aid when using a coracle.
  • It is advisable not to use your coracle on your own. Always tell someone where you are going and preferably have someone on the bank with you (to take the photo's of you falling in).
  • All coracle handlers should be able to swim.
  • Coracles are not covered by the EU Recreational Craft Directive, which regulates small craft safety. As historic replicas, they are exempt.
  • Be aware of the effects of wind direction and speed. Because of the coracle's shallow draft it can be blown downwind in strong winds.
